Charlotte Chiropractic – What You Should Know

The first thing that people ask me when I tell them I’m a Chiropractic Care provider, is, what exactly IS Chiropractic Care. They have these images of being strapped to one of those medieval racks, I think, that stretches their bones and tortures their spines until they snap. Let me give you a brief definition of Chiropractic Care.

Aches and pains are our bodies way of telling us that something isn’t working right, that we’ve exceeded the limits our body can withstand. Your entire body is controlled by your brain, your spinal cord and all of your nerves. When we experience some kind of physical, chemical or emotional stress, our nervous system forces our body into a defensive posture. Our muscles contract, causing our spinal joints to lock. These locked joints can pinch or irritate nearby nerves.

These pinched and irritated nerves can be a source of many health problems, beyond just headache and back pain. For example, interfering with the nerves that go to or from the stomach results in stomach problems. Your nervous system controls every aspect of your body, the cells, tissues, and organs. It’s necessary for nerve impulses to be able to travel freely to all parts of your body, so having a healthy spine is essential for optimal health.

When a chiropractor does an examination, he finds these pinched and irritated nerves and, by using direct force on the locked joints, he can release the pressure and help the body heal itself. There are many different techniques for releasing this pressure, none of which involve a rack! Sometimes a slow, constant pressure is used, and sometimes a targeted thrust. And several areas may be adjusted or just one. After repeated visits, the body is almost always restored to health.

There are many types of stress that can affect the spinal cord. And everyone reacts differently. An aerobic workout at the gym is good stress for a 25 year old man, but would probably have adverse effects on a 75 year old man.

Physical stresses can be cause any number of ways – repetitive motion, for example painting a house or a scrubbing the walls, can be a major contributor to physical stress problems. Sleeping with your neck twisted can create physical stress, as can slips and falls, car accidents, even being born creates physical stress.

Emotional stresses can have effects on our bodies, too. Take a look at the posture of someone who is depressed, or stressed at work, or someone who has just experienced the loss of a loved one. And today’s environment constantly bombards us with chemicals. Drugs, alcohol, tobacco, preservatives, pollen, vaccines, etc. All of these can have an adverse affect on our nervous systems and our muscle tone.

When your body reacts to these stresses, which can never be completely eliminated from our lives, by going into that defensive posture that so often pinches or irritates nerves, chiropractic care can help with healing. Now that you know what a Chiropractic Care Provider can do for you, you should schedule an appointment.
